FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can get tested?

Anyone. Testing is volunteer, anonymous, rapid and completely free.

2. Do I need to have some identification with me?

No need. Testing is completely anonymous. We do not request any confirmation of your identification.

3. How much does it cost?

Testing is completely free.

4. How long does it take?

The whole testing process usually takes between 10-15 minutes.

5. What STI tests do you offer?

In our space in Nicosia we offer testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C. In PopUp and Outreach testings we offer testing for HIV & syphilis.

6. How accurate are the test-kits you use?

The test kits we use have 100% (in case of a negative result), and 99.8% (in case of a reactive result) sensitivity and specificity. There is no (first-line) test that is 100% accurate. Our tests have a window period of 3 months.

7. What is a 'window period' of a test?

In case of a negative test, there is a specific period that the test does not cover. Our rapid tests have a window period of 3 months, which means that the test does not cover the last three months  prior to the testing date. If you get tested today and you have a negative result, this means you were 100% negative 3 months prior to today.

8. What does a negative result mean?

A negative result means the test did not find any antibodies. A negative test is 100% negative, not counting the window period. This means that we can confirm you were 100% negative 3 months prior to the testing date.

9. What happens if I test positive?

There is no first-line test that is 100% accurate. This is why everyone follows the protocol of having to repeating a reactive test in order to confirm it, before announcing a positive result. Thus, we will never say 'you tested positive'.

10. What does a reactive result mean?

A reactive results means that the test has detected antibodies for the virus you are testing for. This means that there is a possibility that you may have come in contact with the specific virus and your body has produced antibodies. However, no test is 100% accurate. In such a case, you will need to take another test to confirm the result. Our trained Community Health Workers will provide you with all the information you need and options for you to consider. We can also facilitate the logistics if you wish, such as book the confirmatory test for you, and/or accompany you through the process (Linkage2Care). We know how the health system works in Cyprus, so you can rest assure that we will help you with everything needed.

11. Can I get a written report of my test result(s)?

Sure. In such a case you will need to provide us with some sort of identification (i.e. an National ID or passport), so that we can give you a report that mentions your name and identification. This is the only case where the anonymous test stops being anonymous.

12. Can I join your team as a volunteer?

Of course you can. We though you'd never ask! :)
